On Monday, Sept 30th, members of the Fight back Committee of Make the Road CT will visit the offices of Bridgeport Mayor Ganim to demand a meeting. Please sign on below to show your support for this request!
Make the Road members hope to discuss what can be done in Bridgeport to ensure the safety of our immigrant community amongst the increasing anti-immigrant sentiment and climate in the country.
This meeting is especially timely because on Oct 1st - tomorrow - a new state law, the TRUST Act, goes into effect. This new law, which was passed this year after Make The Road members spoke out, limits communication between ICE and local police. But we know that unless local agencies comply, nothing will change.
Dear Mayor Joe Ganim,
Members of our Fight Back committee at Make The Road CT have ran into you at different events including the Friday, July 12 press conference at Burroughs Community Center and at different back to school events last August. When you spoke at those events you stated your support for the work our organization does, and that you stand with the immigrant community. You shook our members’ hands and took pictures with them constantly repeating that you are with us and care about every single immigrant that lives in Bridgeport. You said you’re going to stand up and protect our immigrant families. We deserve to live with respect, dignity, and feel safe in our city that we call home. You promised to give us a meeting and we have been trying to schedule it since then.
On August 31, 2019 we emailed your Director of Legislative Affairs, Constance Vickers, to schedule this meeting and it has not happened. It has been 2 months of back and forth emails, phone calls, and we still do not have a date. As your constituents we have the right to meet with you and share our concerns. Our members want to learn about you and figure out ways to work together to support our immigrant community. We deserve the right to be heard and we want to express our fear regarding the current anti-immigrant environment. What we’ve heard from you publicly is that you support us, so we want to share our current concerns about our safety here in our city, Bridgeport.
One of the urgent topics we want to discuss is the implementation of the Trust Act here in Bridgeport. We are excited about this new law that goes into effect, October 1, 2019 but we know that unless local agencies comply nothing will change. We want to hear about what the city of Bridgeport is doing to comply with the new law.
It is urgent for the immigrant community to share our concerns with you. And we hope that you prioritize this meeting.
