Walking Towards a Brighter Future Petition

Our current school system sets up students to fail.

Bridgeport High schoolers do not have school buses and students walk unsafe routes every day due to not all of them qualifying for bus passes to take the public bus to school. High schoolers must live 2.0 miles away from school in order to qualify for public bus passes.

Most students are not given bus passes and don’t have access to school buses. And so students walk, often over one hour - through streets with unsafe intersections, poor lighting and substandard sidewalks. Students walk in the heat, in the snow, and in the rain.

If and when we make it to school, the security lines hold us up, and are unwelcoming. Instead of being able to go into our first class and receive our education, we are at risk of being kept out of class and punished for being late. Being tardy means being kept out of first period, and eventual detention. Students struggle to accumulate enough credits to graduate on time.  It's a vicious cycle. And our students deserve better.

That’s why Make the Road Connecticut youth, with support from The Nature Conservancy and Sacred Heart University assessed the quality and safety of the walking routes most often used by Bridgeport High schoolers. Their results showed that 82% of street segments and 91% of intersections received a failing grade. These results proved what the students already knew, the city is not prioritizing the health and public safety of Bridgeport students.

Now it's your turn.  Join us as we let the our Bridgeport Officials know - it's time to put Bridgeport students first! Its time for the City to commit to ensure that our students have safe walking routes to school.

SIGN ON: Join a growing movement of Bridgeport parents, students, and concerned residents to tell Bridgeport to commit to helping Bridgeport students “walk towards a brighter future”

Dear Mayor Ganim,

The Make The Road Connecticut Youth Power Committee, together with the Nature Conservancy and Sacred Heart University, assessed a total of 34 intersections and 44 segments along nine routes used by Bridgeport high schoolers who walk to school. Almost all 82% of segments and 91% of crossings examined received a failing grade. In addition, students who walk/cycle/skate to school more often reported feeling unsafe, missing first period, and lower grades due to travel-related challenges than students who ride in a motor vehicle.

It is bad enough that Bridgeport high schoolers need to live 2.0 miles or more just to qualify for a public bus pass to get to school. There is a culture of not prioritizing the public health and safety of Bridgeport students by not giving them school buses. Let's start changing that culture. Let’s put our students first!

It’s time for you as our Mayor to work together with Bridgeport students to ensure that our city provides students with transportation to high school.  We are asking for the Mayor’s support in ensuring that our students have safe walking routes to school.
