Building Power Through Participation

At Make the Road Connecticut (MRCT), we believe democracy is strongest when everyone has the opportunity to participate. Decisions made by elected officials and public institutions affect our families, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Everyone deserves access to the information and resources needed to understand these decisions and participate in the process.

Through civic education, community outreach, and organizing, we connect community members with reliable information and meaningful opportunities to participate in civic life.

The Guardians of Democracy Project

The Guardians of Democracy Project brings community members together to strengthen civic participation in Bridgeport and Hartford. Through training and hands-on outreach, Guardians develop the knowledge and leadership skills to engage their neighbors in conversations about democracy, voting rights, and issues affecting their daily lives.

Guardians share nonpartisan voting information, connect neighbors with trusted resources, and encourage participation through door-to-door outreach, phone calls, and community gatherings. By building relationships and making civic information more accessible, they help community members find ways to make their voices heard and become leaders in their communities.

Our Voices Matter All Year Long

Voting is an important part of civic participation, but democracy doesn't begin or end at the ballot box.

Attending a City Council or school board meeting, learning about local government, speaking with public officials, and working alongside neighbors to address shared concerns are also ways to participate in our democracy.

When people have access to information and opportunities to participate, they can stay informed, engage with public institutions, and help shape the future of their communities.
