Bridgeport, Support a Tenant Bill of Rights to Ensure Dignity and Justice for All Residents!

SIGN PETITION: Bridgeport, Support a Tenant Bill of Rights to Ensure Dignity and Justice for All Residents!

Target: Bridgeport City Council

We are the Bridgeport Housing Fighters, and we believe in empowering tenants to live free from landlord oppression. Through education and unity, we aim to ensure that every tenant in Bridgeport knows and can assert their rights. That’s why we’re calling on the City Council to pass the Tenant Bill of Rights, an ordinance that will protect the dignity and well-being of all residents.

We've heard heartbreaking stories from our community, tenants facing unjust evictions, skyrocketing rent prices, and landlords neglecting basic maintenance. In fact, studies show that 1 in 4 renters in Bridgeport have reported issues with their housing conditions, and nearly 30% of our residents are paying more than 30% of their income on rent. This is why our demands are so crucial.

Some of our key demands include implementing fair rent control measures, providing translated documents in Spanish for public housing and court proceedings, extending legal services to undocumented residents, enforcing penalties for landlords who neglect property maintenance, and enacting policies to protect tenants from unjust evictions.

We also call for the hiring of additional housing inspectors to ensure compliance with regulations, maintaining public infrastructure, creating affordable housing options, removing credit report requirements from apartment applications, and preventing property sales to out-of-state landlords. Additionally, we want to establish a Fair Housing Commission, mandate regular inspections, allow tenants to give feedback, and provide proper training to city employees.

These demands are essential to ensuring that all Bridgeport tenants have access to safe, affordable housing and fair treatment. To learn more about our demands, click here.

By signing this petition, you’re joining us in the fight for dignity, fairness, and justice for all Bridgeport tenants. Together, we can urge the City Council to make Bridgeport a place where every tenant can thrive.

Dear Members of the Bridgeport City Council,

There are countless tenants in Bridgeport who are struggling with issues such as unjust evictions, rising rents, and inadequate housing conditions. Many residents feel powerless due to a lack of awareness about their rights and resources, making it essential to empower our community with a Tenant Bill of Rights. This reality highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive ordinance that protects the rights of tenants.

By guaranteeing clear rights for tenants, we can help our community understand where to turn for support and guidance. The Tenant Bill of Rights will enable tenants to advocate for their needs, ensuring that they have access to safe and affordable housing.

The Bridgeport Housing Fighters are addressing these pressing issues by demanding fair rent control measures, language access through translated documents, and accountability for landlords who neglect their responsibilities. We also seek to establish a Fair Housing Commission and enforce regular inspections to ensure compliance with housing standards.

If you agree, I urge you to support the Tenant Bill of Rights (List of demands here) and advocate for the dignity and well-being of all Bridgeport residents.

Please sign today to support these critical protections!
